The heartland of South India is home to a three-thousand-year-old craft, Kalamkari. The craft involves making elaborate motifs by hand and block-printing using natural pigments and dyes. While the artisans have continuously practiced it over several thousand years, it was during the Mughal period that it flourished significantly, taking it to newer heights. What makes this art form instantly recognizable is its detailed floral and fauna motifs that depict the local ecology.
While floral motifs are most prominent, the designs stretch beyond to include scenes from Hindu mythologies. Epic scenes from Ramayana, Mahabharata, Krishna, and Radha are recurring themes in the crafts motifs. The artisans sit through long hours and hand-paint the fabric using a bamboo or date palm stick. Simultaneously, they also use carved wooden blocks to make repetitive patterns.
Curating a collection of Kalamkari kurta for men for Jaypore has been an exciting journey. The kurtas are made from high-quality premium cotton that offers you comfort and style together. Each kurta features distinct motifs and patterns, offering you a wide range of styles.
Jaypore's Kalamkari men's kurta showcases a fusion of traditional and contemporary motifs. While keeping the floral patterns intact, we have also used geometric patterns to offer a touch of modern aesthetics. The collection features earthy, rustic, and deep colors that can be worn on casual, formal, semi-formal, and light occasions.
Each kurta is made using premium cotton. Thus offering you the utmost comfort. They are lightweight and breathable, making them an all-season essential. They also make for a great choice for your everyday elegance. The kurtas feature mandarin and round necks with single and multiple pockets to carry along things. Jaypore's Kalamkari kurtas range from INR 1,290 to 3,899.
The craft originated in the ancient Andhra Pradesh and Telangana regions. The history of the craft goes as far back as three thousand years, making it one of the ancient crafts of India. However, the craft became renowned under the royal patronage of the Mughals and the Golconda Sultanate. Since then, there has been no looking back.
The Kalamkari master artisans use naturally occurring dyes and pigments extracted from pomegranate seeds, madder roots, flowers, mango trees bark, myrobalan fruit, and more to create the motifs. The primary motifs depicted in the craft include the natural flora and fauna of the local regions. The vines and flowers depicted in the fabric make for a serpentine maze of patterns that becomes the distinguishing factor of the craft. However, the motifs are not restricted to just this. The artisans also hand-paint scenes from the Hindu epics of Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Krishna and Radha. Thus lending a historical charm to it.
What is interesting to ponder is the technique of Kalamkari, which has remained unchanged for thousands of years. The artisans use date palms of bamboo sticks to draw or paint the patterns on the fabric. Making it a labor-intensive and often time-consuming process. The craft also involves block-printing the repetitive patterns. In this process, the artisans first carve the designated designs onto wooden blocks. They then dip these blocks into natural dyes and use pressure on the blocks to make imprints on the fabric. Yet again, we see the artisans use two ancient craft techniques to make awe-inspiring art.
It is worth noting that over the years, Kalamkari has developed into two distinct styles- Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam. Both styles are named after the towns from which they originated. The Srikalahasti style is known for using more penwork and painting mythological figures with vibrant colors. When it comes to Machilipatnam, the artisans use more block-printing techniques to make larger and bolder motifs of flowers, vines, and geometrical designs. While the craft is mainly used in textiles, it has extended to include various other mediums as well. Thus making it a versatile art form.
