- Preparing the Fabric: The foremost step is to prepare the fabric or cloth. It goes through a series of processes, where its starch is removed. The cloth is soaked into a solution until it foams when rubbed. Then, it is washed using water.
- Kasano: In this process, the cloth is washed with myrobalan, the powdered form of the nuts from the Harde tree. This acts as the first mordant in the dyeing process.
- Khariyanu: In the next process, a resist paste of lime and Arabic gum is applied to make the outline of the designs. The designs are printed on both sides of the fabric using a wooden carved block.
- Kat: In this process, water is mixed with scrap iron and jaggery and left for twenty days to make it ferrous. This water is then mixed with powdered tamarind seed and boiled to make a black paste. This paste is then printed on both sides of the fabric.
- Gach: In this step, a resist paste of Arabic gum, clay, and alum is applied, and simultaneously, a paste of lime and Arabic gum is applied for the next phase of resist printing. The areas are then sprinkled with sawdust to prevent further smudging and left to dry for a few days.
- Dyeing: Once the cloth is dry, it is then dyed with colors. Once done, it is washed to remove the resist pastes.
- Boiling: The fabric is then boiled to impart various deep shades to the resist-dyed areas, thus achieving the overall color of the fabric.
