The ghats and lanes of Banaras have more to offer than spirituality. Tucked in its alleyways are master weavers whose skills in weaving the luxurious Banarasi fabric have made it world renowned. Banarasi silk fabric's roots in the city can be traced as far back as the 14th century during the Mughal era. What makes Banarasi silk fabric luxurious is the use of zari threads, typically made using gold and silver threads, offering an unmissable lustre. Adding to this is the fabric's bright and bold colours.
At Jaypore, we have curated a collection of Banarasi brocade fabric. Weaved using premium materials and traditional techniques, the fabrics feature contemporary motifs. This collection reflects our efforts to preserve age-old craft techniques and bring them to a global platform.
The roots of the Banarasi craft can be traced back to the Mughal period, around the 14th century. However, the Vedas mention a luxurious fabric with an immaculate sheen. This fabric was often referred to as Hiranya and woven with real gold or silver threads. It was known to be woven by both male and female weavers of that period.
The fabric was initially reserved only to be worn by the royalties and noble families. It flourishes in the present day, beginning during the 14th and 16th centuries. It is believed that when the weavers from Gujarat fled to Banaras because of famine, they brought their weaving craft. It was then that the weavers of Banaras started using silk for brocades. Gradually, the weavers incorporated motifs inspired by Persian, Central Asian, and Mughal art. The craft reached its peak during the Mughal era and was famous beyond the Indian subcontinent.
In the present day, the craft still reigns in everyone's heart. It is one of the most preferred fabrics for brides on their wedding day. It is also adorned by women in various festivals and celebratory occasions.
