The roots of the Banarasi craft can be traced back to the Mughal period, around the 14th century. However, the Vedas mention a luxurious fabric with an immaculate sheen. This fabric was often referred to as Hiranya and woven with real gold or silver threads. It was known to be woven by both male and female weavers of that period.
The fabric was initially reserved only to be worn by the royalties and noble families. It flourishes in the present day, beginning during the 14th and 16th centuries. It is believed that when the weavers from Gujarat fled to Banaras because of famine, they brought their weaving craft. It was then that the weavers of Banaras started using silk for brocades.
