The craft of Jamdani reverberates throughout the history of India. Each time it is narrated, it evokes a sense of pride and tranquility. It is fascinating that a craft can evoke those feelings together. Such is the eloquence of Jamdani. While it has been practiced for centuries, it was during the Mughal regime that it gained popularity. What makes the craft legendary is its complex weaving technique, which puts it in league with the world's finest fabrics. The super fine texture and feel are achieved through a discontinuous weft weaving technique. It can take even years for the weavers to complete one saree.
For Jaypore, curating a collection of Jamdani cotton sarees has been an honor. Our sarees are handwoven by artisans using meticulous traditional craft techniques. Each saree fuses Jamdani's advanced weaving technique, comfort, and contemporary design nuances to offer you an assorted collection of Jamdani sarees.
The crown jewel of Bengal weavers, Jamdani, was first mentioned by a 9th-century Arab traveler, Sulaiman. While traveling through the undivided Bengal, he wrote about a fine fabric so soft in nature that it could easily pass through a ring. As the political boundaries of the Bengal region changed, so did the cultural fabric. By the 12th century, the weavers started assimilating Islamic influences into their designs, further enriching the craft. The craft reached its pinnacle during the Mughal regime, and the people were known to adorn men's and women's clothing pieces made from Jamdani. The yarns, dyeing process, loom, and all other weaving materials are locally sourced and made. Thus, forming a unique craft ecosystem in the region that has helped the artisans' community thrive.
In the weaving process, the weavers start by weaving the spinning wheel, which is mostly made from bamboo sticks. Once the yarn is prepared, the loom is arranged for further weaving. During the weaving process, the weavers use a shuttle of threads locally called 'Maku'. As weaving advances, the discontinuous supplementary wefts are used to create the motifs by hand. The artisans interlace the weft with the fine base warp in a zigzag pattern, creating beautiful motifs. The weavers sit through painstaking hours to weave the magic.
Jamdani comes from the Persian words 'Jam' and 'Dani'. While 'Jam' means flower, 'Dani' means a vase. These meanings get translated into beautiful floral designs on our sarees. Let's have a look at our collection:
